Quite a few big powers have contradictory business and strategic interests in Bangladesh now. Each one expects the new government to fulfill their own interests. It could be very difficult to have a balance and satisfy all.

It is learned that there are huge outstanding bills in the power sector regarding electricity, gas, etc. There could be outstanding dues in interest and debt payment against mega projects. It is not very clear what our foreign exchange reserves actually are. After payment of outstanding dues, our foreign currency reserve could be critical. The government needs to be prepared for that.

The economic situation is fragile. Investment and development activities are slowing down. Unemployment is rising every day. The inflation rate is high. Due to a lack of economic activities, internal revenue collection is declining. It could be difficult to bear the expenditure of running the government. Printing new currency will trigger inflation further.

Export earnings are declining and have become very uncertain. The only reliable source of foreign currency is from expatriates. A shortage of foreign currency can lead to a devaluation of the money. This will add to the already high inflation. The cost of living will be higher. There will be a continuous decline in real income. Poverty and hunger may increase. This may lead to deterioration of law-and-order situations. Social instability may grow. Political unrest may emerge. Without political stability, investment and economic recovery will not be possible.

Recommendation to the new government

Focus should be on ensuring political stability. Another important task should be to work for unity. We are a divided nation now. It will be impossible for the government to tackle such a gigantic job ahead all by itself. Efforts are to be strengthened, not to divide but to unite the nation. By allowing normal political space to all, unity and political stability may be achieved.

We are hopeful, present government will pursue the end of vengeance, hatred, or hostility in the name of cheap and unrealistic patriotism. A sense of confidence and safety is to be restored in all spheres of our nation.
